In a post-mortem report released today, the Argentine Prosecutor’s Office has given more details about the circumstances of Liam Payne’s death on Wednesday 16 october 2024 afternoon at 31 years old. The former One Direction member died from multiple trauma, internal and external haemorrhage and cerebral damage from a fall. Preliminary investigations also found drugs in his hotel room.
The statement in Spanish says: “The musician was alone when he fell and was in some kind of drug use episode. But the case is being investigated as a ‘sudden death’.” According to the report, on Wednesday at 5:07pm local time Payne fell from the balcony of his hotel room at CasaSur. A worker had called 911 minutes earlier to report “a guest who was high on drugs and alcohol and had trashed some belongings in the room”.
According to the report “the forensic experts have found that the 25 injuries in the autopsy are consistent with a fall from height”. “The craniocerebral injuries were sufficient to induce death, and they also discovered internal and exterior hemorrhages in the brain, thorax, belly, and limbs that contributed to the cause of death.”
When the first 911 call was made to the police Payne had already fallen from the balcony of his room and was dead from the “gravity of his injuries”. According to the report to get a better idea of what was in his body when he died forensics are waiting for the results of the histopathological, biochemical and toxicological studies. But preliminary examinations found that his room had “drugs and alcohol and various broken belongings and furniture”.
The report says forensics found no injuries on Payne’s body that would suggest third parties were involved in his death or foul play. According to the investigation Payne “didn’t take a defensive stance” based on his position of landing. Two women and three hotel employees who “were with the musician in his room” have been questioned by authorities, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Payne’s death was confirmed to Rolling Stone by the Buenos Aires Security Secretary on Wednesday afternoon. According to SAME’s Director Alberto Crescenti Payne “suffered fatal injuries” after falling from “around 13 or 14 meters” according to local media.
Todo Notices, a CNN affiliate in Argentina, has released the audio of a hotel staff member’s 911 call to Buenos Aires police. At 5pm local time the hotel staff called the police and asked them to hurry to “a guest who is high on drugs and alcohol”.
